Rheumatic Disorders

Autoimmune Technologies is working on several exciting discoveries in the field of rheumatic diseases.

Autoimmune is currently conducting FDA clinical trials of its APA Assay ELISA test kit, which is designed to detect antibodies associated with most cases of fibromyalgia. The Company believes that the presence of these antibodies will support the proposal that fibromyalgia is a discrete autoimmune disease in the same manner in which the discovery of rheumatoid factors in the 1940s demonstrated that rheumatoid arthritis is a discrete autoimmune disease. The Company is also working on diagnostic tests for systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren's syndrome, Graves' disease and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Researchers at Tulane University School of Medicine have discovered a human retrovirus called the Human Intracisternal A-type Particle, or HIAP. Their research strongly suggests that this virus is the cause of all four of these disorders. The Company believes that a test to detect antibodies against this virus will be very valuable to patients and physicians alike.
